MUSIC PROGRAMS

The State of Texas considers Music to be a curricular, rather than an enrichment, subject. Therefore, Lovett’s Fine Arts magnet program offers three Instrumental Programs, a Choral and Handbell Program, and a comprehensive Vocal Music Program from which parents and children may choose based on individual interests. None of our regularly scheduled music classes conflict with other academic subjects. All Lovett students are required to maintain high academic and conduct standards (at least 70% or the grade of “S”) in all subjects in order to be eligible to perform.

All students participate in a 50-minute Fine Arts class each day, Monday through Friday, as part of their regular school schedule.

In addition to Music, students attend PE, Art, and Library, depending on their grade level, in a 5-day rotation.

  • Pre-Kindergarten & Kindergarten attend:
    • Music three days per week, each day with a different music teacher
    • PE and Art on the other days
  • 1st through 5th Grade attend:
    • Music two days per week with the program they have chosen (Band, Strings, or Vocal Music)
    • PE, Art, and Library on the remaining days

The Lovett Music Programs are learning environments in which children:

  • lengthen attention spans
  • strengthen concentrating abilities
  • sharpen listening skills
  • develop fine motor and eye-hand coordination
  • respond instantly to verbal or visual commands
  • improve organizational, problem-solving, and decision-making skills
  • practice the disciplined, automatic eye movements needed to become good readers
  • care for and respect the value of expensive equipment
  • discover confident and self-disciplined behavior
  • grow in their understanding of the meanings of “precision” and “perfection”

Program Offerings:

  • Kindergarten: Comprehensive musical readiness experience
  • 1st Grade: Flutophone Ensemble (Band), Strings, or Vocal Music
  • 2nd Grade: Recorder Ensemble (Band), Strings, or Vocal Music
  • 3rd–5th Grade:
    • Traditional Band
    • Strings
    • Vocal Music

Chorus and Handbells are afterschool programs and require an audition within the Vocal Music Program.
